Lucha Libre Legend Rey Mysterio Sr. Passes Away at 66

The wrestling fraternity has lost another icon in the form of Rey Mysterio Sr., a wrestler who died at the age of 66. Acknowledged outside of the ring as Miguel Angel Lopez Diaz, Lucha undertook an important role in the Mexican wrestling industry and specifically in the prominence of AAA, which is Mexico’s leading promotion for Lucha libre. His family and AAA officially announced the sad news on Twitter, with kind words for fans and athletes from all over the world.

Rey Mysterio Sr. was not only known for his championship-winning streak, which includes the remarkable record of 2,374 days as Pro Wrestling Revolution Tag Team Champion but he was also regarded as a trainer. He inspired many luchadors, the most famous being his nephew, Rey Mysterio Jr., a WWE hall of famer. His demise comes in the wake of Rey Jr.’s loss in November, that of his father, Roberto Gutierrez.
